What is the difference between oil-based stain and water-based stain.

  1. Just what it says.  In an oil-based stain the pigments are suspended in oil.  Frequently linseed oil or mineral oil  In a water-based stain the pigments are suspended in water.  


  2.    The big thing is the cleanup.

    With oil base anything, you must clean Brushes, rollers, and any spills with mineral spirits, turpentine, or paint thinner.

    With water base or latex anything your cleanup is with water.
