  1. u have to have plasma refilled every 5-7 yrs  i prefer lcd

  2. Dear, oh dear.  More rubbish, regurgitated by people who don't actually know what they are talking about.

The website below has the truth, not the fairy stories:

  3. One is plasma, the other is lcd.

  4. plasma screens get hot and easily mark go for lcd

  5. Lcd is the way to go.. As well as direct Tv..

  6. Plasma screens have the individual pixels made of gas-filled cells which glow when an electrical charge is applied. The plasma panels used for tv screens have over a million of these. A third each capable of displaying one of the primary colours: red, green or blue.

The tv electronics energise the cells appropriately to construct the picture.

Plasma panels are self-illuminating and relatively fragile. Nobody really knows how long they'll last in a domestic environment because they haven't been in common use for more than a few years; but theoretically they don't last as long as LCD. They're also prone to 'screen burn' where an image that is permanently displayed will eventually become 'fixed'. This is the phenomenon that CRTs used to suffer form and led to the development of the computer 'Screen Savers'.

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) have their pixels made from small liquid crystal panels. These are similar to the ones used in some wristwatches. The lcd's are equipped with red, green or blue filters to make up a colour picture the same as with plasma. When energised (similar electrical arrangement to the plasma display) the lcd varies in transparencey. A special Very White light from an expensive bulb behind the screen is used. As the lcd pixels' transparency varies the picture is constructed. LCD displays are not prone to screen burn, but they do cost more than plasma for large screen sizes.

Theoretically, plasma screens should have higher contrast ratios than LCDs but in practice you wouldn't notice.

From a practical and cost consideration, look for LCD up to 47", plasma above that.

In about five years both types will probably be rendered obsolete by Organic displays which are currently being developed by Sony. These beat plasma and LCD in practically every measurable parameter except cost.
