  3. plunger pump mainly consists of a piston(ie the plunger) reciprocationg in a hydraulic cylinder to produce flow and pressure.

    A diaphragm pump uses a diaphragm to pump a fluid. A typical design is to have air on one side constantly vary in pressure, with fluid on the other side. The increase and decrease in volume caused by the action of the diaphragm alternately forces fluid out the chamber and draws more fluid in from its source. Air is usually supplied by a compressor.

    The action og the diaphragm is very similar to the action of a plunger with the exception that a diaphragm responds to changes in pressure rather than the mechanical force of the shaft. That means the piston will force the fluid whatever may be the result which may cause damage.... whereas the diaphragm since is flexible will not cause overloading pressure.

  4. *Plunger Pumps are reciprocating positive displacement pumps which are generally configured in four ways: direct-acting or indirect-acting; simplex or duplex; single-acting or double-acting; and power pumps.

    Some reciprocating pumps are powered by prime movers that also have reciprocating motion, such pumps are powered by a reciprocating steam piston or plunger. The plunger rod of the steam piston may be directly connected to the liquid piston of the pump or it may be indirectly connected with a beam or linkage. Direct-acting piston pumps have a plunger on the liquid ( pump ) end that is directly driven by the pump rod ( also the piston rod or extension thereof ) and carries the piston of the power end. Indirect-acting pumps are driven by means of a beam or linkage connected to and actuated by the power piston rod of a separate reciprocating engine.

    *The diaphragm pump has been developed for handling corrosive liquids and those containing suspensions of abrasive solids. It is in two sections separated by a diaphragm. In one section a piston or plunger operates in a cylinder in which a non-corrosive fluid is displaced. The movement of the fluid is transmitted by means of flexible diaphragm to the liquid to be pumped. The only moving parts of the pump that are in contact with the liquid are the valves, and these can be specially designed to handle the material. In some cases the movement of the diaphragm is produced by direct mechanical action, or the diaphragm may be air actuated.
