  1. product development has to do with the product as it relates to the consumer.

process design has to do with how you are going to make the product.

  2. Well, Product Development is a PROCESS in which one starts with an imagination - to make something entirely new or something which would be a huge improvement to some existing product. It is a series of experiments, trials & errors, documentation, testing, FMEA to finally come out with the imagined item. "Product" can be any hardware (a racing car or computer, for example) or a software (3D copying programme for a milling machine or even a new type of Mutual Fund, for example)

Process Development is a PROCESS to finalise the sequential steps which would result in producing the desired (already known) product. It is the sequence of operations to produce the racing car, computer, the 3D programme or marketing the new MF as mentined above. This is necessarily a document which gives the know-how to make (or sell) the product.

  3. As an example

Building software is a highly creative process, so Product Development is when you focus the design as a Product, in order to clearly define functions, specific releases and support functionally, over the time, when the product is launched.

Process design involve the process to design the 'Solution' (or product), but in software the product never is completely defined, because is a 'abstract product' that nobody, (including the client), knows. So the 'product' evolves in time as both, designers and users learns how to build it and want the want. In that way process design, almost, never ends, at least as product is alive
