  1. satinwood has a soft sheen to it and eggshell is a flat matt finish.

  2. Eggshell is not a matt finish.

20/30 yrs ago there were not the range of paints there are now, particularly water based paints.  Eggshell was an oil based paint usually used on walls which had to be hard wearing, but not too glossy, kitchens and bathrooms usually.

It was unheard of to paint interior woodwork with anything other than a full gloss and eggshell was never designed for woodwork.  However, it became fashionable to put the low sheen eggshell on woodwork, but as it was not designed for it, 6 months later it would be scuffed and marked.

Satinwood, effectivey, is an eggshell type finish, but designed to be used on interior wood, wipable etc.

Oil-based eggshell, never designed for wood, is largely redundant - though people buy it in ignorance for wood.  We now have adequate water based eggshell for walls.

  3. Satinwood has a slight sheen to it not unlike satin, whilst eggshell is almost matt the same as eggshell...I prefer eggshell.

  4. Satin is a little bit more shiny/glossy.

  5. Satin has a slight sheen to it. Eggshell is a matt finish.Satin is easier to clean.
