So if they are both NaCl, shouldn't they taste the same? Or are they both not NaCl? Also, are there salts out there used for cooking that are not NaCl- I know the true definition of a salt is the result of the combination of a cation and an anion, but do we use other types of salts for cooking? Are there high quality salts out there? Give me some info on this please

  1. no not at all.

Sea salt, obtained by evaporating seawater, is used in cooking and cosmetics. Historically called bay salt, its mineral content gives it a different taste from table salt, which is pure sodium chloride, usually refined from mined rock salt (halite) or from sea salt.

Salt is a dietary mineral essential for animal life, composed primarily of sodium chloride. Salt flavor is one of the basic tastes, and salt is the most popular food seasoning. Salt is also an important preservative.

  2. Sea salt doesn't have iodine added to it.

  3. Sea salt is raw salt extracted from the ocean. while iodized salt is table salt, yes table salt, which were added iodine to address the lack of iodine in the diet in some countries. Sea salt can also be used for cooking and some people say that it gives a different taste when compared to regular salt.

  4. Iodized salt has iodine added to it something your body needs

  5. The trace minerals are different and they are produced differently, which causes them to taste differently and to have a different texture.

Some sources (possibly quacks) claim sea salt is healthier than regular table salt because it has a more "natural" ratio of sodium to potassium.

  6. Sea salt contains additional trace elements not found in rock salt.

Iodized salt has been purified & had iodine added for thyroid benefit.

  7. It is true that the major component of both sea salt and iodized salt is Na-Cl, but unrefined sea salt also contains many other elements and is considered to taste much better than refined salt. In France "Sel de Guerande", an unrefined sea salt from the Britanny coast (http://frenchcuisine.suite101.com/articl... is really popular because of the flavor, and some sources do claim that it offers health benefits over refined salt.

I don't know of any unrefined sea salt that has been iodized, however it will naturally contain traced of iodine. Refined salt, including refined sea salt will not contain these trace minerals, which is why iodine is sometimes added to it as it is a necessary trace mineral.
