  1. In terms of it's use then none unless the reel says 'button thread' which is much thicker than ordinary sewing cotton.


  2. I dont think there's any really it's just terminology, if its on a reel and used for hand or machine sewing I  refer to it as cotton. Thread is actually what my domestic science teacher in needle work used to call it so to me its more of an old fashioned term even though most 'cotton' used now-a-days  is synthetic.

  3. Cotton is thread made specifically of cotton , whereas sewing thread could be cotton, silk, synthetic or a combination of fibres.  To be honest most people say cotton to refer to any thread used for sewing except embroidery silks.
