  1. Scotch is whisky from Scotland and can use different grains and come from different distilleries.

Single malt means that the whisky (not just Scotch) uses only barley that has been malted (partially germinated and then dried out). It also means that all the whisky has come from the same distillery.

Single Malt Scotch is the restrictions of a single malt (only malted barley, single distillery) and it's from Scotland.

  2. Malting is the process of using heat to cause your grains to artificially germinate, kicking off the starches which will be converted into alcohol during the distillation process.

Single malt refers to a whiskey that is comprised entirely of grains that came from the same batch of malting.

A blended whiskey is just what it sounds like; whiskey that blends together different maltings from the same distillery or from multiple distilleries.

  3. A blended whisky is whisky which is from several distilleriesand if labeled scotch must be from Scotland. you can dolute this with ginger etc A single Malt is just that and to  dilute it with anything but springwater from Scotland is sacrilage

  4. normal scotch is usually ablend of more than one whiskey or even afew whereas single malt just one pure whiskey from one distillery mmmmmmm.

  5. Some answers have got close to being correct but none have.

A "Normal" scotch is a blend that may come from distillations from more than one distillery  or from their own but from different years.

A "Single Malt" is not a blend of different distillations but from a single one from a single year. it is then aged at least 8 years

    Hope this clears it up

  6. speaking as a scot who has worked in a bar it is as following:

Single Malt: A single malt, is 1 type of whisky itself from a single distillary, ie Glenmorangie, Bowmore, Dalwhinnie ect

Normal Whisky (blended) : This is a blend of diffrent types of whiskys, as its mass produced ( but not always cheaper )

blended whiskys use diffrent amounts of other whiskys to get theres just right . The most famouse Blended whisky is the world is Johnny Walker Black Label,

    hope this helps

  7. Probably you meant "what is the difference between single malt scotch whiskey & blended scotch whiskey".

Single malt whiskey is a whiskey, which is distilled at a single distillery, and which is made completely from a single type of malted grain.

Blended whiskies are normally cheaper whiskies made from a mixture of Malt and Grain whiskies.

A whisky simply described as Scotch Whiskey is most likely to be a blend in this sense.

  8. It's similar to the difference between chardonnay and white table wine.  Single malt is produced by a single distillery, using a single malt (malt = germinated barley that has been dried (for Scottish whisky they dry it with peat smoke) then they wash the sugar out of the malted barley).  "Scotch" whisky or actually blended whisky like Dewars mixes several whiskys from different sources to produce a "blended" scotch.  Look at the label on Dewars or Johnny Walker red etc.. they call it "blended" Scotch whisky.

The single malt means all the grain is the same variety of barley (there are multiple types - see difference between Coors and Guinness - they are both made from malt), probably the same farm and it was malted/dried at the same time.  Also, all of it was fermented and aged in the same manner in the same climate.  Also the peat used to dry it gives it a distinct flavor.

Try single malts from different regions of Scotland, you will notice that they all have very distinct characteristics, no 2 taste alike.
