  1. Depends on the age of your son. Until junior rugby (12 and up) most kids wear soccer boots. The main difference is that a rugby boot has 4 studs on the heel as opposed to 2 on soccer boots. .

I really wouldn't worry about it if he is under 12, or if he is a back rather than a forward player. Top flight backs like Vincet Clerk & Shane Williams wear togs that are really soccer togs. it is more in the forwards that you need the extra grip.

  2. I'm not sure if its an absolute regulation but my sons always had to have metal studs ( the plastic or part plastic ones often get cut up and can inflict a lot of damage ) One of my sons has always insisted on proper rugby boots with a higher ankle support while the other prefers soccer-style boots with the studs changed. Have a look at the link below ( not that I'm necessarily endorsing them ) but it gives you an idea  It can be a problem buying boots since the traditional sports shops all went into the fashion business.

  3. The difference between the 2 is that on rugby cleats (as you call them in Ireland we call them boots) the studs are much bigger then the studs on soccer cleats. This is because bigger studs are needed to hold grip better on the pitch. Rugby is much more physical there is much more contact  and therefore people will need to dig there studs into the ground to push on or hold their place when they are tackled or trying to force themselves over the line for a try.

  4. Soccer cleats this is a uniquely designed to skillfully control, pass, balance, protects ankles ,grip for speed an sudden movements and tricks.

Rugby cleats has similar functions but cleats are lined up differently formulated they are close.

Soccer cleats can play rugby but rugby cleats cannot play soccer y the rugby cleats gets a bit heavy and u no what happens  next the child get tired and looses focus game over.

soccer cleats the way to go.

  5. Rugby boots, as they're called, have more studs and they are better in strength and durability.

  6. Rugby boots (soft ground) typically have aluminum studs.  Depending on the grounds where your son plays, it may be a good idea to have both soft ground (aluminum stud) cleats and hard ground, molded cleats.  In the back row and back line, many players wear soccer cleats though...since they are so light.  Unless you are in the tight 5, there's really nothing wrong with wearing soccer cleats to play rugby.
