  1. Kym's definition of social work research is overly limited.  Social work research would be applied research in the areas of individuals, families, groups, communities and organization, it would include policy research.

The real difference between social science research and social work is social science research is a general term referring to ALL the social sciences - it is also usually theoretical.  Social work is discipline specific and applied.

    DA

  2. The difference is

    SOCIAL SCIENCE

Social Science deals with the institutions and functioning of human society and with the interpersonal relationships of individuals as members of society  or (as economics or political science) dealing with a particular phase or aspect of human society.

So Social Science Research would be the study of the functioning of "Human Society" and it's institutions essentially.

    SOCIAL WORK

While Social Work deals more with the Individual, specifically

: any of various professional services, activities, or methods concretely concerned with the investigation, treatment, and material aid of the economically, physically, mentally, or socially disadvantaged

Therefore the Research done would focus on the Individual specifically those considered socially "disadvantaged".

  3. Actually I think so that the answer is in the question itself! Socia science is study of subjects like history, civics, economy, and geography. While social work is nothing but heping and trying to improve the society.
