  1. The better rod (and reel) would be the one that you can use best.  A $200 rod and $200 reel isn't worth a dime if you can't use it properly.  If you are just getting into fishing (sounds like you may be), get a spincast rod and reel combo and work your way up into the other models.  While they all accomplish the same task (casting a bait, hooking and landing a fish), each rod has a different action and feel to it and is best chosen when matching it up with the fish you are fishing for.

In the following link, the rod with #1 under it is a trigger rod.  The others are casting rods.  The only difference is the length of the handles.

  2. the type of reel they go to,

    Spinning- for spinning reels

trigger- for bait and spin casting, has a " trigger on the bottom for finger

casting- same as trigger minus the plastic apendage

  3. spinning reels - usually good for general fishing - require intermediate experience - easier to use than casting and has an easy to use drag system.

trigger is also referred to as spin-casting such reels as zebco 33, zebco 808, 202 etc. are probably the easiest reels to use but have a limited drag capability normally these are used by novice fisherman - there are exceptions to each rule but it's all I've seen use them. Press the button bring the pole back to the 2o'clock position start bringing the rod forward to the 10 o'clock position and let the button go...then you use start reeling the line in a little to engage the reel so it will retrieve the line - sometimes it won't engage right away until you put some tension on the line then it will start reeling in the line.

bait casting reels - are usually used by advanced fisherman - if you don't know how to use the reel you could have a real problem with this reel - it's called backlash when you lose control of the spindle and the line gets tangled up badly.  One of the benefits of this reel from my opinion is that once you master this reel it will allow you to control or play the fish alot better - I prefer this when fishing for bass or catfish...or any bigger species.

With each it's personal preference - try a friends for a while or buy one from a pawn shop...go fishing with it a few times...sometimes brand name means everything too - but you don't always need the top of the line reel.
