What is the difference between spontaneous sociology and real sociology?

  1. Well, I'm a soc major and I've never heard either of these terms. But I suppose that sociology is sort of spontaneous in that it happens constantly and is omnipresent; anytime you regard groups of people, spend time with people, watch television etc. sociological forces are at work.  Real sociology, then, is the study of those forces.  As Wikipedia has it:

    Sociology (from Latin: socius, "companion"; and the suffix -ology, "the study of", from Greek λόγος, lógos, "knowledge" [1]) is the scientific study of society, including patterns of social relationships, social interaction, and culture

    The study builds on ancient greek philosophies and the much more recent work of Durkheim, Weber and other "pioneers."
