  1. All horses that race under Jockey Club rules are Thoroughbreds, it is a particular breed, not a generic term for a group of horses.

    Therefore all "stud mares" (the correct term is broodmare) that are breeding to produce racehorses MUST be Thoroughbreds, otherwise the progeny cannot race.


  2. a stud is a horse with good qualities used for breeding. A mare is a female horse. A thorough bred is the highest type horse raced bred for speed and endurance on various races, short or long. In a thoroughbred race. Other horse races may be various breeds.

  3. Question for MissNewman, aren't quarter horses under jockey club rules.  Certainly they do not race against thoroughbreds, but they are great in their on right.
