What is the difference between swim shorts and board shorts?

I know that swim shorts are for leisure, and board shorts are for surfing, but is there any other differences? Which one can you remove the mesh liner?

Do not remove the mesh liner. It has a purpose to hold your parts in. That is what it is there for.

If you must remove it or get boardies without a mesh liner, then you must, yes must, wear a Speedo, TYR, Nike or Kiefer racing brief under the shorts. Underwear--never, never, never to be worn with a swimsuit. If  a lifeguard is doing their job, and you are wearing the cotton drawers, the lifeguard should ask you to remove them or leave the pool. The cotton fibers plug up swimming pool filters.
