Question:

What is the difference between the ANG and the Reserves, besides State and Federal?

I understand that they are different because one is for the State, and the other is for the State and Federal. But are there any other differences between them? Like does one offer better benefits? Does one get deployed more then the other? Is one offering better enlistment bonuses? Which one is better for prior military service? Which one would allow you to go back to active duty, if either do?

  1. The type of federal missions performed varies; the actual service exercise greater control over their Reserve Components than the Air and Army National Guard therefore you will find more service support type missions assigned to the units of the Air Force and Army Reserves whereas more Combat and Combat Support missions are assigned to the units of the Air and Army National Guards.

  2. http://www.slate.com/id/2112001/  that should sum it up nicely.

  3. Natty Guard offers much bigger bonuses because they can draw on both state and federal funding whereas the Reserve relies solely on federal funding.  They both get the same benefits and as far as I know they both get deployed at about the same rate.  In the Reserves its pretty easy to go active if you want but the Guard also has an interesting program called Active First where you go active for a few years before returning to your Guard unit (the Active First guys get BIG time bonuses as well).

  4. The National Guard is the first line of the ready reserves and is called up for deployment first.

The National Guard is the ones who are usually called up like here in Minnesota, I have a good friend who is a chaplain in the Army National Guard and his unit is being activated for the Republican National Convention to deal with the Anarcho-marxist protestors.

As far as benefits and bonuses go, I do not know, you may want to ask a recruiter on that one.

I think the National Guard is better for someone who already has served.

National Guard would give you the best chance to go back to active duty.

Thank you for your previous and future service to this great nation, I just pray when you get done serving you will be able to still live free with out your wealth being redistributed to lazy welfare recipients..

May God Bless you and keep you safe!
