  1. The MiG25 is a single-seat interceptor/recce aircraft.

The MiG31 is a two-seat interceptor-only.  It has a more sophisticated fire-control system (though compared with the MiG25 that's not too difficult to do), and somewhat longer range-due to its engines being detuned.

    Essentially it's the same plane.

FWIW, the "WSO" does the majority of his training in a modified MiG23; saves money on fuel.

the Mig 31 is the updated version of mig 25, being two seater only, and having full lookdown shoot down capability.

The Mig31 is solely the interceptor plane, while Mig 25 had a version R designed for reconnaisance.

The mig 31 uses different armament, too.

  3. Just about everything but aerodynamics. Almost every single part is manufactured differently. The 25 is mostly nickel-steel and the 31 replaces it with titanium.

The 31 has different and far better engines, Soloviev D-30 turbofans, with much better specific fuel consumption and reliability, and about 1/3 more thrust, than the r-15 turbojets of the 25.

The 31 also has a cannon, oddly enough.

They also have different radar, the 31 having a fixed array radar capable of detecting targets at just about any altitude and at great ranges, where the radar on the 25 is far less capable and needs a ground station to direct it to find a target to lock onto.

The 31 also can be armed with the r-33, which is the Russian equivalent of the Phoenix missile.

  4. MIG 6?
