Question:

What is the difference between the Moennig and Muncy clarinet barrels?

I just bought a brand new Muncy barrel for my Buffet R13 Bb Clarinet. I was given a recommendation from someone to get one and after trying it out I loved the sound how much more my sound intensified and projected. I was told by another clarinet guru/friend of mine that I should also consider getting a Moennig barrel as well. I read up on both of them and it almost seems like they are the same barrel: the science and the sound produced (apparently) are very similar. I know the two barrels are out on the market and there has to be some kind of difference between the two of them if they're both being sold. So my question is: what's the difference between the two barrels?

P.S.- If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I would rather you not answer the question at all than leave a snide remark. I actually need an informative explanation because this is in regards to making a decision to spend (or not spend) $150 on another clarinet barrel.

  1. I have to admit I don't know either of these barrels, but why not try the Moennig barrel out and make up your own mind?

I play on Buffet Festivals.  Personally I would only want two barrels per instrument, same make, same bore, different lengths - to allow for tuning.

Once you have an instrument you're happy playing isn't it just gadgetry after that?  I do know people who switch mouthpieces depending on their mood/reed/piece, but I tend to find their sound unstable.  I think the key is in your mouth and ears.

Hope that helps with your decision!
