Question:

What is the difference between the Roman and French way of arranging apartments?

I'm talking about the arrangement of suites in a palazzo vs. a chateau.

I have been all over the internet looking for answers so this is probably going to be a question for those with extensive knowledge of architectual history and design.

  1. I think Roman apartments tend to be built in a square with an open area in the middle to create a courtyard.  You would enter from the outside.

    I think French apartments tend to be more linear, so that everyone enters via a hallway separating the two rows of apartments and everyone enters from the inside.
