1. These four categories only cover three of the political quadrants. The fourth (second, actually) is the one of Mao and Stalin, where economic and social radicalism is combined with political authoritarianism. The first quadrant (conservatism) is both economically and politically authoritarian, although not usually as much so politically as a fascist state would be.

Liberalism (3rd) and libertarianism (4th quadrant) are anti-authoritarian politically, but economically and socially, only liberals (and populists) reject the oppressive economic authoritarianism of a "free-market" voodoo economy.

  2. Liberals think that the government should take care of people from the cradle to the grave. Individualism is counterproductive and must be discouraged.

Conservatives want as little government as possible. Like liberals they would use the government to enforce there beliefs on others.

Populist just go with the majority opinion and have no agenda. They are easily manipulated and it is dangerous.

Libertarians are just short of anarchist. Everything is for the individual. nothing for the common good.

  3. Liberal - more flexible in how the law is interpreted and decisions like family planning is up to the individual.

Conservatism - Strict religious beliefs, follow the law as closely as possible without trying to twist/bend the rules, protectionist towards international business and immigration.

Libertarinists - Believe they are free to do as they please and respecting the choices that others making according to their values.

Populists-Follow the decisions of the majority.

  4. Liberalism, Populism, Progressivism are all the same thing. Liberalism has been so discredited, that they started to use the other two names to try do repackage it. So there are really only two basic philosophies.

Liberalism-The Government is the answer to every problem. So give more power to the Government.

Conservatism-The Government is the problem, so give more power back to the people.

Moderates are as the name implies, neither here nor there. They tend to support the winning side, have few core values and are easily mislead. For that reason they really do not represent a philosophy at all.

Libertarianism is just an extreme version of Conservatism.

  5. It's a really complex set of views for each side. There's usually the traditional view and the practical/modern view for each political movement and party. Here's the basics as close as I know, but keep in mind I may be biased

    CONSERVATIVE:

Traditionally interested in keeping government lean and trim, supporting only social services which are universally beneficial. Less restrictive on business practices. Also usually more "traditional" in regard to morals and outlooks on the future. In modern US politics conservative has become less about keeping a small government and more emphasis has been placed on being the "moral" party.

    LIBERAL:

Traditionally more willing to have higher taxes in order to provide greater amounts of social services. More heavily monitoring of businesses. Usually more progress-oriented than conservatives socially.

    POPULISM:

Traditionally used as a broad banner for large groups seeing themselves as working against some manner of elite. By it's nature it isn't stable long-term as it will either overcome it's "elite" or be dissipated by some other means. Populism is often a more revolution-oriented movement and has to stabilize into something else after it's overthrow of the elite is finished.

    LIBERTARIANISM:

The idea that whenever at all possible, the government should stay out of the business and not interfere with the citizenry. There are many takes on where the line where a government should not overstep into regulating or manipulating situations, but they are almost always as bare-bones as a person can find acceptable.

Each one of these ideals to my mind has faults when taken to it's extreme, and ultimately one must find a mix of each which best suits the situation they live in. There are also many issues where you can't draw a hard conservative or liberal line such as environmental conservation. In practical terms, the US conservative and libertarian movements have opposed the banning of commercial use of wilderness. More liberal politicians have generally pushed to regulate the use of such lands, but at the same time they would be conserving them.

I find it best to address each issue individually and simply use the labels above as very general terms or ends of a spectrum of positions rather than as something one is or is not a member of the group of.

  6. No one knows.

It would be interesting to see a list of all issues in column one, then each party or political viewpoint's position listed in the adjacent columns.

No one party would be likely to agree 100% with your own opinion on the issue (unless you let the party do your thinking for you).

  7. Liberals tend to believe that bigger government is the solution to problems; that somehow, someone else is going to know what's best for you than you will for yourself. In other words, liberals think that people are too stupid to take care of themselves, so government (under liberal control, of course) must do it for them. Liberals also tend to think that rich people should pay larger taxes to support people who don't have as much money as they do. "Rob from the rich and give to the poor" may be a romantic notion in storybooks, but it's not right to take money from people who earn it and give it to people who are too lazy to work. Liberalism is about bigger government, huge spending necessitating higher taxes, and social programs designed to further the individuals' dependence on Big Government. It's a vicious circle which leads toward Communism.

Conservatives believe that people should take care of themselves and that it's your own fault if you're poor, so nobody who isn't poor should be forced by government to help you out. They also believe that their ideas about morality should be forced upon everyone else, especially when it comes to "religious matters." They despise laws which limit the gaining of wealth at any cost, but they believe that they should be able to pass laws which limit the happiness of others, such as their stand against g*y marriage, because some old book about a man who may not have even existed, when run through multiple poor translations, societal rewrites and culture clashes, can be inferred to say that it's wrong. This is the doorway to Fascism.

Populism is a philosophy that states that the general populace, or the People, should be the ones who make decisions regarding their communities and the larger world, and people from diverse backgrounds should be consulted on common challenges. This philosophy completely ignores that larger global issues need to be addressed by a central authority. It is based on ancient Greek City-State Democracy, but has yet to be proven on any scale larger than that of a large city.

Libertarianism, is an ideology that believes in the sovereign individual's rights to liberty in its true definition, while recognizing that government has a duty to perform by keeping individuals who violate the liberties of other in check. Libertarians in the US call for a return to the laws set forth in the Constitution, and state that under the Constitution, the Federal Government is ruling unlawfully by exacting taxes which are not allowed under the Constitution while imposing unjust laws over which it has no legal authority. Libertarians believe that everyone should pay the same tax rate regardless of their wealth or lack thereof and that each State should have the right to pass laws which affect it while the Federal government should get involved only when inter-State commerce is involved. Libertarians fancy themselves as the "True Followers of the Founding Fathers"
