  1. A tropical storm is an intensified tropical low pressure with maximum sustained wind speeds at 40-75 mph.

A hurricane, however, has maximum sustained wind speeds greater than or equal to 75 mph. Hurricanes are very organized, very developed, and can form an eye if and when they are intensified enough. Hurricanes originate in the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico.

Cyclones are hurricanes that originate in the Indian Ocean.

Typhoons are hurricanes that originate in the Pacific Ocean.

These types of weather phenomenon are given different names so that their origin can be distinguished.

  2. A hurricance has sustained winds of at least 118km/h (74mph) and tropical storms have between 62-117km/h (39-73mph).

The only difference between a cyclone and a typhoon is the region they form in. Typhoons form in the West Pacific and cyclones form in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans.
