The first sentence indicates that you are inherently selfish, so that is the way you act all the time.  The second indicates that you are being or acting selfish in a particular instance, but not necessarily all the time.

Just to piggy back on the first response (great answer), it's important to note that they both reference the present just in different ways. One, like the first response pointed out, is sort of like a timeline that leads up to and includes the present (I am selfish - a state of being) and the other is a pinpoint on a timeline (I am being selfish - a referenced action and not necessarily always true).
