  1. The troubadours were medieval poet-musicians of southern France. The troubadours wrote in Provencal (langue d'oc) and the trouveres wrote in French (langue d'oil.)

The word "troubadour" comes from the Latin "tropare" which means "to compose." The troubadours composed in Langue d'oc which is closer to Portuguese or Spanish than modern French. The music and poetry of the troubadour celebrated the courtly ideal of love. Troubadours came from different social backgrounds, but they all had to conform to courtly ideals.

The trouveres wrote in several northern regional languages. Their work was similar to the poetry and music of the troubadours, though there were also some differences.
