  1. Chair is a term frequently used for the highest office in an assembly such as a committee, commission, or board. The term is also applied to the holder of the office. While the term chairman remains in widespread use, chairperson, and chair have become increasingly common.[1]

The duties of the chairman are to preside over the assembly and to conduct its business in an orderly fashion. When the assembly is not in session, the chairman often acts informally as its head, its representative to the outside world, its spokesperson, etc.

  2. Chairperson is often used as many people incorrectly believe chairman is a sexist term.  In fact, it is not.  Chairman, fireman, policeman etc do NOT attach gender to a position.  However, because so many people jump to the conclusion that they do suggest a that the holder of the position is male, it has become common to replace man with person (or officer in the case of the police).

  3. Practically no difference in using both terms.Chairman and in modern days it is called as chairperson who is a head of constituted board,Assembly, commission or institution with all delegated powers respectively.

  4. both are same...

in modern times... chairperson is extensively used... as that would be equally applicable to men and women...
