  1. Its not just 720 and 1080, there are cooresponding letters that signify which lines are refreshed.  i which means interlaced means that every other line is refreshed, while p means progressive which is every line is refreshed, so you get a clearer picture.

720 and 1080 are just screen resolutions, the bigger the resolution the less it has to be stretched to fir your TV, and the clearer the picture is, which is why 1080p is the best/clearest picture you can find.

  2. When considering the superior format, you must consider both resolution and scan format.resolution is the picture area in pixels, higher number , more pixels. resolutions are 720i,720p,1080i,1080p. Scanning means how is the picture information transformed into a moving image on the screen. the P stands for Progressive scan, that is one full picture frame after another, the way movies are projected at the movie theatre. "I" stands for interlaced, this is where a picture is made in two parts, first one set of scan lines and then the other is mixed or interlaced to fill in the gaps of the first set,  this is the way analog television is broadcast, because of a naturall eye/brain phenomenon called "persistance of vision" an intelaced picture appears as a complete picture to a human being.

the higher the resolution number, the higher the detail . A progressive picture will have more detail because all of the detail information will be on every frame, Interlacing is not fast enough to have all the detail together in one frame. 720P is actually superior to 1080i but 1080p is superior to all the other formats.

  3. I honestly don't even see a difference but....

    720 is HD while 1080 is FULL-HD.
