  1. The difference is 1 ton.

What is a ton of air conditioning in SI units?

It is an energy unit that should be able to be converted into BTU/hr or kW or something similar.

This unit originated with the cooling capacity of a ton of ammonia, the first refrigerant.

A Ton of air conditioning equals 12,000 Btu/h

(also one Btu/h is equal to 0.293 watts so...One ton = 3.516 Kilowatts)

You probably need a ton and 1/2 or two ton airconditioner, since your smaller one isn't working.

    Now you know.

  2. HVAC Tech.:  12,000BTUs. A five ton unit will be three phase, where the four ton would be 220v single phase. The 5 ton would be a small commercial unit. I have seen two fives built into the same case making up a 10 ton unit.

  4. One ton is correct.  Relates to the ability to remove the same amount of heat as would be required to turn one ton of 32 degree ice into one ton of 32 degree water in one hour.   To put it in perspective, a one ton window air conditioner would cool one pretty big room.  (maybe 20 X 30)

Keep in mind, that a properly sized ac system will pretty much run continuously on the really hot days.  Such a system will cut your energy costs, and effectively dehumidify, which is a big part of keeping a house cool.   Don't expect to see a properly sized system cool a house from 85 degrees down to 70 degrees very quickly,...especially when it's 90 + degrees outside.

    Hope this helps.
