  1. H means Hard, B means Black.

    So HB is the best of both worlds - "Hard Black".

    2B, 3B, 4B, etc. get blacker and blacker.

    2H, 3H, 4H, etc. get harder and harder.

    Hard pencils are good for thin lines, are quite pale, and don't rub off easily.

    Black pencils are good for shading and sketchy-looking work, are quite dark, and do rub off easily.

The H grades are progressively harder and make a thinner and paler mark,if you press on they dent the paper more.The B grades are softer and make a blacker mark,you can press on to make a darker mark without denting the paper too much.Good quality pencils have a smooth even "lead"(actually it's Graphite).

  3. if you look at it closyly

    they are all diffrent size.

    the led gets bigger of smaller

    so for shading you would use maybe a hb
