  1. -r and +r are just diff formats, and can be used pretty much on any DVD or CD player.  However, -rw and +rw are different, -rw only allow you to record onto the bit following what you recorded previously e.g record a prog but delete it you will have a blank space that cant be used (unless you erase and format the whole disk).  Whereas +rw allows you to record onto that space aswell (if you want) therefore it is a better format to have.  If your considering getting some recoradble disks check that they will work with your machine first (it should have the symbol on the disk tray) and if not then buy +rw as they are a more commonly used and versatile disk.

  2. The - & + are just different dvd formats. Most dvd players/burners will do fine on either.

RW stands for cd/dvd rewritable (so you write to it & erase like a floppy disk)

  3. TechLore has a full guide on this topic called "Understanding the Different Types of Recordable DVDs."

The information regarding -r and -rw info is also applicable to CDs.
