  1. I think they're both great. My friend had 2 black labs, 1 boy 1 girl. They were great.

But of course, with there being 2, the boy was more protective towards the girl.

I have only ever had Boy dogs since i was a child, nothing against females, i was just bought up that way.

    Hope this helps :).

  2. Labs, when trained, are very useful and versatile!  The guide dog schools love them for this reason.  Most are amiable and get along with your visitors.  As a breed they are very easy to train; a chocolate Lab puppy in my puppy kindergarten class caught on to all the new exercises quicker than any other puppy in class. In general males will be more interested in patrolling and marking territory and be more offended at the presence of an unfamiliar male. Females IMO tend to be more alert and aware and let you know sooner if something is amiss.  But there aren't any hard and fast rules. I've had some very alpha females and some very beta males.  I've also had the reverse.  Go by the temperament of your individual puppy - the breeder should be of great help here, since she will have had the opportunity to watch them interact with each other and their environment over a period of time.   Let the breeder help you pick the individual personality that will mesh best with your family.  If you want a Lab for competition you'll need a more alert and driven personality than you would if he's just to be a household companion.

  3. I don't know.

In my opinion, female dogs are usually over-all smarter. I've heard different people say the same thing.

But that's just my opinion, something I've noticed. ^-^

  4. Mine was a female dog. She was extremely loving and affectionate. On the other hand her brother happened to be out neighbors dog and was a little wild.

My female learned to use the loo to pee and s*** within 3 months and the male was still s***** around their house. maybe they did not try to train him.

she learned tricks, she understood emotions, she treated me like a sis and my bro like her bro, she was at equal with us on the other hand she used to treat my parents differently.

when my son was born i was not afraid to leave him near her, seldom did she try to come near him, he gave her a bad time threw keys, pillows, tried to stuff her with bread, always shared his biscuits with her

conclusion: female dogs are loving and emotional.

  5. I have 2 boys and 1 girl, I will never in my life have another female.

She is crazy, and hyper.  My boys are kicked back and happy with staying home.  My female destroys all kinds of stuff.  She is the smartest though, and I think this may be why she is such a handful.

  6. i hope this is right because my grandma has one male, one female.

    the boy is more aggressive.

    the girl is more obedient.

the girl is easier to train.

so...i would get a girl.  but they are usually more expensive so do what you want.  also, get her fixed!  there are waaaaaaaaaay to many unwanted labs/retrievers.  its not fair!

good luck with whatever you choose!

  7. jst me xx, I wish I had a a labrador retriever.

  8. All depends on what you want them for.  Males are territorial and they are best at protecting the property.  They buy them to protect junk yards and other places they don't want intruders to enter.

Females of all dogs are more inclined to protect the person, they get attached to the family and will protect them to the death.

A female with puppies is the most aggressive, it is their instinct to protect their young.  Which when they are fixed become attached to their family, and aggressively protect them.

They are both easy to train because they are smart dogs.

A Male won't let anyone on the front porch, a female will not let anyone touch the children.

  9. Usually females tend to be a bit more aggressive, and hyper.

Females can be fun dogs to have, but you also have to remember, that they ALSO have that "time of month". If you get her fixed, you wont have to worry about it.

Overall, i think males might be easier to own as a first pet.

  10. In my opinion, there is simply no difference between a male or a female labrador retriever in general.  What makes them different is how you train them.  Professionals can train all kinds of dogs of both genders the exact same way, so males and females will be different depending on how much they're trained.

  11. We rescue dogs and cats for the humane society in Idaho.  It has been our experience that as pups they are incredible chewers.  They will chew on just about anything you have.  One time we were gone and had a female 11 mo. female in the house.  She chewed up a stuffed chair, tore the stuffing out of it.  It helped us decide whether we were keeping the chair or not.  She outgrew this stage by about two years.

We have a seven month male that is chewing holes in two walls (he isn't alone, just bored), the wooden dog house and about anything he can sink his teeth into. We are out of chew toys.

The lab females seem to be more protective of my wife, and the male is worried about other males encroaching on his territory.  They all get along with each other and love to rough house. (all seven).

Bongo - the male more aggressive in territory

Shasta - female more aggressive protecting family , scares visitors.

Both sexes have been easy to train.  The first thing we teach any foster is to sit to get petted. (keeps clothes cleaner)

All of the dogs at our house are fixed.  What is more important in getting the dog is getting a book like "The Dog Listener" and reading it.  Remember, labs love working and love to swim.  They are not a lay around the house type dog.

  12. I read some where that they use females for seeing eye dogs or home companions because they are more people friendly if they are fixed.

With puppies they can get a little aggressive.

So a female is more a companion than a male.
