What is the difference of a Casual Longshoreman & Union Longshoreman? And do you have to receive a sponsorship letter to become a Union Longshoreman?? Thanks

  1. A casual one is one that is working on an irregular basis. Only when there is extra work that can't be filled with full timers or work that is availible due to vacations, sickness or that such. There are only extreme cases where you will become a full timer with out being a casual. you start out as a general casual, then if you work a certain number of hours in a certain time you become a preferred casual, one that gets called ahead of any regular casual. as a preferred casual you will be considered for full time employment when there is an opening for a full time position, Go to your local Longshoremans Union hall ad they can explain all the particulars to you and what your obligations are along with the rules you need to follow. If you have family or friends that are longshoremen then it certainly would be helpful to present a letter of introduction from them or an officer of their Union.
