What is the difference of being moody and temperamental?

  1. I think moody is NOT something we can control (without drugs or an outside source), ie. mood disorders like bi-polar, whereas, temperamental describes our character, a personality trait, which we have TOTAL control over.  


  2. There really is no difference. Moody is cited in the dictionary as this: (notice that tempermental is a synonym)

    Moody:

    Given to sudden or frequent changes of mind; temperamental

    sulky or depressed

    dour, gloomy or brooding


  3. Both words technically mean the same thing, but they have developed different connotations over time.

    Moody means that someone is sulking around, feeling dark and petulant.

    Temperamental means that a person goes through the whole array of emotions quickly, flying off the handle easily or throwing themselves into a creative whirlwind.
