  1. Relative density, sometimes called specific density, is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a given reference material.

Density of a substance is the ratio of its mass (m) to its volume (V).

  2. Relative density as the name suggests the denisity of a material with respect to a given material, while the Denisty is simply the ratio of the mass to volume of a body.

  3. Relative density is the ratio of the weight of the material divided by the total volume including the voids in the material. Example: a one cubic feet box made of 1 inch thick white pine wood would weight about 20 lbs. Thus the relative density of the box is 20 lbs per cubic foot.

However density is the weight of the material divided by its actual volume. The actual volume of the wood material in the example is only 0.421296 cubic foot. So the density of the wood material is 47.47 lbs/cubic foot.
