Question:

What is the difference/similarities between -kun, -san, -sama, -chan attached at the end of someone's name?

i often hear this on Hunter x hunter and Naruto.. (Japanese Language)

so please tell me something about this.

i really want to know.

  1. theyre different suffixes that are used to denote how polite you are to them. kind of like mister and misses, or sir and lady in the english language.

    -same would be like sir or madam

    -san means mr or ms.

    -kun is used boys you know well

    -chan is used girls you know well


  2. It all depends on the degree of politeness, social status, and how well you know the person, which ending you would use.

    -sama is used for people much higher ranking than you (i.e. the president, a prince, a political figurehead)

    -san is for everyday use. It is polite, so you can use it for just about everybody.

    -kun/chan is used only for people that you know well, like friends and relatives. Kun is usually only used for males and chan is used for females. Although sometimes that rule doesn't apply.
