herodotus can almost be called the father of anthropology as well as history. he history of the persian wars is full of cultural anecdote and folktale. but he was the first writer that we know of to take an interest in the customs and institutions and history of other cultures, though he must be approached very carefully as to his accuracy. sometimes, he is downright bigotted, often fooled, sometimes just plain wrong.

thucydides is cool and factual compared to herodotus. his aim is not to delight, but to preserve an accurate record of the events of the peleponnesian war for all time and be of service to readers down the centuries. his work is not as fun to read perhaps, but far more substantial and lasting in its aim to present the truth in a researched, skeptical manner. read them both.
