I think you're asking what's the difference between orthodox geography and solid geography.  Common, or orthodox geography, as taught in schools usually is two dimensional having to do with the surface of the earth.  I don't think there is a common acceptance of "solid geography."  However, there has a emerged a concept of spatial geography that adds a third dimension (up).  See the reference for more information.
