  1. Stabilizer: A fixed airfoil at the tail of an aircraft that balances the aircraft in flight.  Without it the tail would fall.  At the rear of the stabilizer are small "flaps" (elevators) that are used to raise and lower the nose to climb or dive.

    Stabilator: The whole Assembly moves as a unit to do the two jobs above.  Thus, there is no need for elevators so it is one single airfoil.  Often used in fighter aircraft to provide larger control surfaces for combat maneuvers
