Normal Volleyball  -

1. Up to six players

Beach Volleyball -

1. Two players

2. Played in the sand

3. Winner is best 2 out of 3

4. Players have to be well rounded in all positions

5. no substitutions, the same 2 players have to play the entire game.

normal volleyball is played on a court with 6 people on each side.  beach volleyball is played on the beach, or a sand court outside with 2 players on each team.  and i would say that beach volleyball is much harder than normal volleyball because you only have 2 people and you have to move fast on the sand.

There's actually alot of differences.

*Each half of the court measures 8 by 8 meters, not 9 by 9 as in indoor volleyball

*Overhand finger passes are called very tightly when receiving or attacking. Unless executed very cleanly and square to the shoulders, they are ruled illegal. The exception is receiving a hard smash.

*The standard for double hits when using overhand finger passes and hand sets is much stricter than in indoor volleyball.

*The block always counts as the first contact

*The disallowance of the open-hand dink play where a player uses his or her finger tips to redirect the ball into the opponent's court.

*It is legal to cross under the net as long as doing so does not interfere with the opponents' attempt to play the ball.

Other differences I'll add:

*While setting you are allowed to "deep dish" which is illegal indoor.

*While for the most part offense indoor is bombing the ball beach uses much more of a shot selection which include roll shots and dinks.

*Communication is more important in beach. From blocking signals to serve recieve to calling shots.

*Indoor runs many quick attacks and combination plays.  Beach rarely does.  Sometimes a quick set is possible but rare.

Although both are volleyball, they really are different games, both physically and mentally.  Indoor is a great team sport that is very fast and powerful.  Can you really beat a day at the beach tho?
