  1. BS Computer Science is a more fundamental and a more mathematical degree. BS IT is more business oriented. To my way of thinking the former is the superior degree rather than the latter.

  2. Yes, I agree with most of the above that a degree in Computer Science is more mathematical and deals with all the theory and research behind computing as well as a lot of programming.

IT deals more with database designs for particular business applications and setting things up in a business/office environment.

It depends what you want to do in the future. I would recommend to go with the CS if you have strong mathematical background since having that you can do everything that someone with an IT degree can do. But someone with an IT degree would not be able to do what a CS graduate would do.

Also check the courses for each degree as sometimes IS, IT and CS degrees have the same courses but are under different name.

    Good Luck!

  3. Computer science deals with programing computers

Information technology deals with networks that the computers use

  4. IT majors focus on how information and computing systems support business, research, and communications needs. Instruction ranges from the basics of computer hardware to the complex relationship between humans and computers.

As an information technology (IT) major, you'll study computer science, business, and communications. Along the way, you might focus on one specialty such as web development or digital communications. But regardless of your focus, you’ll acquire strong technical and communication skills.

Typical Courses to take for IT Major :

    Computer networking

    Computer systems and architecture

    C++ programming

    Database management systems

Ethical, legal, and social issues in information technology

    Introduction to computer science

    Professional and technical communications

    Systems analysis and design

    Web technologies

    Careers for IT:

    Computer and Information Systems Managers

    Computer Programmers

    Computer Systems Analysts

    Database Administrators

    Network Administrators

    Operations Research Analysts

If you study computer science, you may learn how to design computer programs that allow humans and computers to speak to one another. Keep in mind, your work is more likely to help a vision-impaired person than a captain navigating the universe, but you never know.

Computer science majors learn about computer systems and the way humans and computers interact from a scientific perspective. Instruction includes the theory and design of hardware and software. You design Web pages, develope software, test software, or build other computer skills

Typical Courses to tae for Computer Science Major:

    Artificial intelligence

    Computer system organization

    Data structures and algorithms

    Digital system design

    Introduction to program design

    Mathematics for computer science

    Software engineering

    The theory of formal languages

    Careers for computer science majors:

    Computer and Information Systems Managers

    Computer Programmers

    Computer Scientists

    Computer Software Engineers

    Computer Systems Analysts

    Management Consultants

  5. I have a BS in Information Systems and I'm a Database Administrator.  I work with many programmers, some have IS some have CS and others have engineering degrees.  I think if you want to design a computer, chips, embedded systems like in cars and cell phones then CS would be a better choice.  IS is more business oriented.(Accounting systems, payroll, billing, Human Resources).

  6. An IT is an engineer. Computer science is just that, science. A CS degree is more math based, in fact it requires a minor in math, at least at my school. They do both work with computers, but an CS is about the science and research behind it and an IT is more along the lines of knowing how to run systems and programs.

  7. I believe Computer Science is more of the programming side of computers, where as IT is more of the whole aspect of computers and networks. Usually someone in IT can fix a problem with a computer or the network. They do a lot of setting things up in offices and things like that. At least that's my understanding. But maybe you should contact your college advisor and ask for a more thorough explanation of each major & what career paths you can take based on each major.
