  1. You can own a share of stock, or 2 shares or 3 shares...


  2. Stock is another word for a piece of a company. A share is an induvidual piece that has been broken down to a dollar value. If you add up all the outstanding shares and times them by the dollar amount it costs per share, you get the value of the company, or the capitalized cost.

    GOOG (Google) is a stock.

    You can own shares in a stock, eg 100 shares of GOOG.
