  1. Just want to say that Scott D is incorrect about commercial pilots for fixed wing aircraft needing to be instrument rated.  I have a commercial/instrument, but the other pilot I work with holds his commercial certificate, but has no instrument rating.

  2. About 2000 hours flight time in multi-engine jet aircraft.

  3. There is really no difference between getting the pilot certificates from an independent flight school as opposed to getting them from a two year college that offers flight training. However, you can get an Associates degree in aviation from the college, but your flight training may be more expensive and it will take longer (2 years). At an independent flight school that offers "accelerated training" you can earn your ratings in less than a year if you have the money and can devote full time to it.

  4. The biggest difference is usually how you pay for it. Going to a college will allow you to pay with student loans, which can have significantly lower interest rates than the loan companies that flight schools offer. You will usually get your ratings faster (it depends on how you go about paying for all of it though) going though a university plus you get a degree with it. The flight instructors that work at universities are typically more experienced and are used to training students in a short amount of time. A good source to get information on flight training is the Aircraft Owner's & Pilot's Association (AOPA) website.

  5. 2000 hours is a smart butt answer. The truth is about 300 hours or so. To be a commercial pilot you must be an instrument pilot except for helicopters. An ATP rating takes 1500 hours minimum. An the ratings are for type aircraft, multi engine, single engine. Jet ratings can be gotten as a commercial pilot but it is the same check ride as an ATP so just do the written.

I hold an ATP, multi-engine, commercial instrument single engine with Convair type ratings, commercial helicopter and flight engineer truboprop and turbojet with 16,700 total time.

    I hope hat helps

    Scott
