  1. Different sizes and shapes are basically for different size riders, different levels of ability and different functions. I'll use Zap boards as an example since that's what I ride:

    Small, thin boards like the BAT are good for smaller beginners (kids) that are gonna stick to sand skimming:

    The WEDGE is a good beginner/intermediate board that is good for sand skimming and small wave riding. It's available in different sizes according to how much the rider weighs:

    The PRO is a little bit longer than the wedge model and is geared more towards technical tricks. The length allows the rider to get further out to the waves while still allowing you to make quick maneuvers:

    Boards like the COMP are for more advanced riders. These boards are very expensive and are usually made of a composite material like carbon. These boards are longer and more bouyant so they can take the rider further out into the waves:
