  1. It isn't  usual to see trains that are more than a mile long.


  2. Modern railcars are approx 12 feet across, and anywhere from 40-100 feet long.  The engines in a consist are the same 12 foot dimension from right to left side, but typically measure around 75 feet long.

    It depends on what the application of the train is on how long it is.

    Mixed freight, grain, and coal are some of the longest trains... freight is sometimes light, while loaded coal is very heavy.

    Syrup (cornsyrup) trains are some of the shorter ones, but also one of the heavier trains.
