  1. In assuming since you mentioned being given antibiotics you have had the cat to the vets and ruled out any of the respiratory diseases. Here is the dosage information. For cats it just says 10mg.

    Benadryl for Dogs or Cats:

    Dosage every 8 hours:

    Dogs under 30 lbs & *CATS: 10 mg *

    Dogs 30-50 lbs: 25 mg

Dogs over 50 lbs: 50 mg

Benadryl is a brand name for an anti-histamine (diphenhydramine). Although it is considered fairly safe for use in dogs and cats, please be aware that it does have potential adverse side-effects. It may interact with other meds that your pet is taking, so do not use it without first consulting your veterinarian. You should also use extreme caution using Benadryl in dogs that have glaucoma, prostatic disease, cardiovascular disease or hyperthyroidism.

Benadryl is quite effective when used in proper dosages. It helps the following symptoms:

    -- Stops itching & rash

    -- Controls vomiting

    -- Good for motion sickness

-- Can be used as a mild tranquilizer

    -- Good for snake bites

    -- Useful for vaccination reactions

-- Good for bee stings and insect bites

Be sure to use only the plain Benadryl formula. Giving Benadryl with other combination of meds could be fatal, so be sure to read the box.

Liquid Benadryl is too high in alcohol content to be safely used for animals. Please use capsule or pill form.

  2. Never give a cat human medications. They are not 'little people', their bodies are entirely different than humans. Many human medications are toxic to cats and can cause serious illness or death.

See another vet or tell your existing vet that the antibiotics did not work. There are many different antibiotics and each is targeted for a particular purpose. Once, we had to try about 4 different antibiotics to find the right one that would help with our cats problem.

  3. I would only give her about 1.5 mg. If you give her anymore, she'll just be sleepy all the time.

I give my 7 lb. Maltipoo 3 mg and it solves her allergies without making her really sleepy.

You can give animals childrens benadryl, it won't hurt them.

  4. I would check with a vet to make sure. However I have an 8lb. adult cat who had an allergic reaction to a vaccine and I gave him 12.5mg (you would use a high dose for such a purpose), your purpose is not as crucial. Based on this I would use the recommended dosage on the below petplace.com link.

They do sell antihistamines for pet use check out the attached links for further info. Please note that cats do not like the bitter taste of benadryl and it may be difficult to administer. Start with the petplace.com link it is very informative. Based on the petplace.com link 1.5- 3mg every 12+ hours, is the dose for your 3lb cat.. I hope this is helpful.

  5. 1mg : 1 lb.

It sounds to me like you've either got a kitten or a very emaciated cat. Personally, I would be concerned about giving an antihistamine with sedative properties to either kitten or sick cat.

I would not assume that your cat has allergies just because one round of antibiotics did not cut it. You especially should know that kittens and sick cats do tend to take more than one round of antibiotics, or just a different type to take care of certain infections. If your cat has infection-related conjestion, and you give a medication with sedative properties, you're just making her cardiovascular system work harder. With a cat her size, that's the last thing you want to do.

You need to go back to your vet for a recheck before you start treating a compromised cat yourself - not to mention I have NO idea how you're going to get 3 mgs out of any type of diphenhydramine.
