I have some Phenylbutazone tablets.. 1.0 g...can anyone give me the dosage? It says on the bottle to refer to the insert...but it seems it has been lost because it is not with the bottle...probably mice in the barn...used it to build a nest??! THanks in advance once again...all the help is tremendous. It is amazing to me how I can panic with my animals and can't keep a straight head when one of them is hurting..so, thank you, thank you!!

  1. My bottle says 1-2 grams per 500 pounds of body weight not to exceed 4 grams per day for inflammation and pain.

    Hope it's not serious!

  2. 1 gram per 1,000 pounds, once or twice a day.

Studies have shown that giving more isn't effective.  Side effects can include paralysis of the ascending colon with long term use.

Ponies cannot tolerate as much as horses even on a pound per pound basis.

    Edit:  here's a website:  http://www.southernstarstables.net/mycus...

    Last paragraph.

  3. The normal dosage is 1 gram for every 1,000 pounds of horse. Bute is typically given 2 times per day, as close to 12 hours apart as you can give it. As mentioned by others, Bute can have serious side effects. You need to have your vet come out and diagnose the problem before you mask the pain with Bute.  Let your vet prescribe the correct amount of Bute for your horse and the right amount for the current problem.

  4. If your horse is in pain then the easy solution and most ethical one I can think of is to call the vet, but that's just my simple mind at work. If your horse is in pain you don't need to keep popping him pills, you need to find out what is hurting him so you can fix it.

And my next question is why do you have equine pharmaceuticals lying around so that mice, dogs, cats, or humans could reach and possibly ingest intolerable amounts? The new trend among druggies is stealing animal medications and selling them on open market. Several barns in my area have been broken into and had their meds stolen, costing nearly thousands of dollars in stolen and damage property. Not only that but high dosages if consumed by a child or small pet can easily kill if not hospitalize them.

Keep the meds in a lock box or stored safely in a lockable refrigerator. If you don't know the proper dosages off the bat, then you need to consult a vet so you aren't over or under dosing.

  5. no more than 1 tablet per 500 pounds. I would go with 1gram per 1,000lbs. You can easily overdose and it is better to give less than too much. Also no more than twice a day as stated before.

  6. BE CAREFUL!  I read the instructions on the bottle and gave my horse 4 grams/1200 lbs.  the vet says I could have killed him.  Don't ask for advice here - call your vet!  He won't charge you for advice over the phone.
