Jane is in my head today. I am reading Emma....I am amazed by the richness of the characters- how real they seem. Thanks for your comments. L

  1. Finding the balance between marriage for love and marriage for survival.

  2. A lot of the books are about finding out what people's true feelings are, in a society in which people have to be very circumspect about what they say.

  3. I would say women and propriety. You will notice that her fixation to hook her characters and weave them with a range of suitors is not merely in attempt to find "true" love, but simply love...or, if I were to condense it down further, a suitable marriage.

Her writings bring out the true plight of women, who with the custom showcase themselves to be morally upright and homely, but yet with a looming prospect of unknown decay - they have to be cared by someone financially.
