I have tried an online course that came highly recomended, it didn't help, i have used lots of websites.

I watch a lot of japanese anime with subtitles, that might subconciously help a little.

But what is the easiest and fastest way to learn Japanese without spending much money?

And a way to increase my memory? as that might help too.

Thanks.

  1. First off, learn hiragana and katakana before doing anything else - they're essential in understanding how the language works and sounds.

To do that I'd recommend books called 'Lets Learn Hiragana' and 'Let's Learn Katakana' which you can find on Amazon for about $20 together.

Once you've got some understanding of hiragana you can move onto a book called 'Genki' which costs about $30 from Amazon.  I'm working through this now -  after 6 months of living in Japan i'm still using it... I'm a stoned slacker though so you should do better...

Genki teaches all the basics and after the first 2 chapters is entirely in hiragana which is really good practice to get you fluent in the easier alphabets.

Alternatively, you can get free podcasts from JapanesePod101.com which are pretty useful for shoving on your iPod for a bit more subconcious learning.  You can get the latest 10 downloads for free or, for $4/month, you can download a back catalogue of about 2000 podcasts.  Morality aside, it's technically possible to pay for one month, fill up your hard drive and unsubscribe but, well, it's your conscience..
