Besides hiring someone else to do it? Use a sharp utility knife to cut it into strips as you tear it up. Roll it up as you go. Wear gloves and BE CARFEUL! It wouldn't hurt to wear a dust mask either - if the rug is old all sorts of dust and stuff will surely be in the air as you start tearing it up.

Get an exacto knife and cut the carpet into 4ft strips. Roll each strip and through them away. If you try to remove the carpet all at once it will be to hard to roll and will be way to heavy to carry. Trust me the 4ft strips are way faster then the entir carpet at once. Good Luck
