We're thinking of buying acreage. We have had pets, but have no experience raising livestock. We're thinking of getting some "farm animals", but don't want that to be our full-time job. For example, I don't think dairy cows would suit us well, because of the need to milk them every morning. We want a little more flexibility. For example, we were thinking of animals that graze on their own, so we don't have to feed them every day.

  1. Spanish goats are nice to keep the acreage down and trimmed..plus make very good pets..they require a litle feed and salt block and mineral blocks..but they can literally "free range" with a minimal overseeing..you must have a good fence though..they are good escape artists..

Spanish goats are also a short haired goat and need no shearing like angora goats do so they are low maintnence..they do make exceptionally good pets here..here is a link on a petting ranch for children and goats...They also kill and eat snakes..snakes do not like to hang around where goats are raised

  2. What's a small farm without chickens and a rooster? We had a small flock of Orpington chickens. They are really easy to have as free range pets. They are great foragers, so they can fend for themselves, provided they have shelter, roosts, a nesting box and water to go to. The best thing about them is they lay beautiful, extra large brown organic eggs for you, EVERY day!

    Good Luck,  ;-)

  3. dry stock,

  4. chickens do well, you can leave them out food and water and they will be ok..also, maybe beef cows..those are good because as long as they can eat the grass and have a water source, they are fine. You will love the meat too!
