And nothing over $200:) I just need to make craft stuff but don't want the hassle of doing much...I'm just learning.

  1. I have used a few now and have had a couple die.  I am currently borrowing a HUSKY VIKING EMERALD 116 and as soon as i can i will be getting one of these.  For only $300 (seems like a lot but if you buy 2 @ $150 and they both die...) you get a machine with a great motor and easy to understand features.  It glides through heavy corduras and webbings but works just aswell with silnylon.  I won't use any cheap brands ever again.  This isn't the top dog of the the VIKING line and you really don't need any more than this offers.  The only other thing that might be nice to have is an overlocker.  I know joes uses one and he could tell you more about it than me.

  2. You're going to have to do more than put your fabric in with any machine.  You'll cut, pin, ease, and guide the fabric.

Brother has some good machines under $200.  While there are cheaper machines, pay at least $100  to $150 for a new sewing machine to get a sturdy machine that will hold up to regular use.

  3. A sewing machine where you just insert the fabric and out pops a finished piece is made of solid unobtanium.  You will need to learn to operate the machine correctly, cut fabric correctly and handle the fabric correctly, at a minimum.

Best advice I can give you:

The farther away you get from working with standard cotton fabric, the better the machine needs to be.  You'll get a far better used machine than new at $200.  If it must be new, I'd suggest Janome, which seem to be the best for the low end machines.

  4. I recommend that you save your pennies and buy a Bernina.  Love mine.  Cost you around $2200

  5. Brother.  You can buy them at for less than $200 and my Brother sewing machine was the easiest beginner sewing machine I could hope for.  I know four other people who have told me the same and two of them are much more experienced sewers than me and two are less experienced.

  6. There isn't much that is reliable even for craft stuff if you do a lot.  the Janome gem machines are about $300 and reliable.  You may be able to find a used one.

  7. I would advise you to go to Sears and see if you can get an associate to give you a demonstration on their Kenmore machine. They have several models and be firm that you just want one with the least amount of bells and whistles.
