  1. There are some great ideas for a beginner at the Craft Yarn Council site.  Actually, if you Google "beginning knitter" (keep the quotation marks), you'll find tons of information!

There are some people who ignore the classification of a project and start out with something that they really want to make, asking for help as they get to a point where they have a problem.

If you've never, ever knit anything, start with a small square or rectangle in plain garter stitch, which just means knitting every row.  Sew a seam and make a tube, make another piece with the same number of stitches and rows, and you have a pair of wrist warmers.  Sew across the bottom as well as up the side and you have an iPod or cell phone sock!  Make a lot of squares (or really long thin rectangles) and sew them together for a blanket.

Get out a favorite sweatshirt.  Lay it down flat and measure the width and the length.  Knit two big squares with those dimensions.  Sew side seams and shoulder seams and you have a warm vest.  Knit two more squares, fold them in half, and sew them on for sleeves.  If you don't want to make big squares, you can make smaller squares or rectangles and sew them together to get the size you want.

A great book called "Woolly Thoughts" is available from Dover Publications for under ten dollars!

  2. I would say "knit all rows" or knit one row and purl one row. Knit a simple scarf. There are many links on Google that will show you how to do that. It's easy. Good luck!

  3. What about dishcloths?

I started with a swan.  They take a short time to knit and it's a good way to practice.  The easiest ones just use knit and purl and then you can advance from there.

  4. Knifty Knitter a round loom . Michael's , AC Moore , Hobby Lobby or Jo Ann's ;)))
