What is the easiest way to clean a crusty stove top?

I make a paste with baking soda and water.  Spread it on the stove top and let it set for 20 minutes or so.  Then scrub it with a good scratchy sponge.  If it doesn't work, then sprinkle baking soda on it and put vinegar in a spray bottle.  Spray the vinegar on and let it sit and bubble for a while.  Then scrub again.

If it's porcelain, use any oven cleaner.

with ajax and a good sponge and some fantastic spray...let it sit for like 10 mintues and scrub away!!

You didn't say what kind of surface you are talking about.  the traditional 4 spiral eyes or smooth glass top.

For the traditional spiral eyes, I soaked the metal components (not the heating elements themselves) in hot water which had powdered Cascade disolved in it.  Let it sit overnight and you will be surprised how easily they clean up the next day.  almost no scrubbing!

For glass top, when I get a real honest to goodness crusted mess that doesn't srub off in normal cleaning, I use a razor blade scraper people use to remove stickers and clean paint off windows.  Holding it at a 45 degree angle and not applying a lot of pressure, it will remove the crusted sections.
